Abstract : A problem commonly found in a foreign language classroom is EFL learners' silence and nonparticipation. The present study was an attempt to investigate the issue of silence in Iranian university foreign language classrooms. This study was conducted at Islamic Azad University, Isfahan Branch. Four English listening and speaking classes were observed. To measure the extent of macro-level silence in Iranian university EFL classrooms, Classroom Oral Participation Scheme (COPS) was used as an observation instrument. Eighty-seven participants answered a 66-item questionnaire on factors contributing to nonparticipation as well as strategies used by students to participate in the class. Interviews with participants about silence were employed to confirm the findings on students' silence in the classroom. The results showed that there was an undeniable lack of students-initiated talk in the classrooms. The research findings indicated that a considerable number of students were reluctant to respond to the instructor and remained silent in oral English language classrooms due to many reasons such as low English proficiency, fear of speaking in front of others, negative evaluation, lack of confidence and fear of making mistakes. Moreover, the students employed different strategies such as write and say what they have written to participate in classroom oral activities. This study presented convincing evidence that there was a general trend towards silence among Iranian university EFL learners. Consequently, some measures need to be taken to exalt students to participate in oral activities. The findings of this study help teachers and learners to consider the psycholinguistic factors in teaching and learning..
