Abstract : Computer-based media have placed new specific demands on language which can promote variation in language use (Halliday, 1990). Electronic mail, as a form of computer - based media, can promote such a variation in language-use as Halliday predicts. This study investigates the e-mail literacy in Persian students and focuses on the effect of closeness and social distance on the formality of the written messages. For this purpose, 180 high school students (male and female) participated in this study. The subjects were asked to write two e-mails and send the first e-mail to their teachers (as the person with a higher social status) and the second one to their peers (as the person with the same social status). Their e-mails were examined for: a) social distance in each form (e-mails sent to the teachers and those sent to the students) and b) degree of closeness. To examine the first research question the frequency and percentages of the intended features were calculated and subsequently for the first and the second research questions two Chi- square tests were run. The findings indicated that the e-mails students wrote to their teachers and those sent to their peers differ in terms of formality and discourse features. In addition, the result showed that there is a meaningful difference between the e-mails sent by males and those written by females signifying the important role of gender in the style of e-mail writing..
