Abstract
:
Despite the importance of advertising and its language and influence on the language and culture of the society, the language of advertisements is one of the most neglected areas of research in Iran. However, advertisements are very important as they use people's language to convince them to buy or do something. They influence people, their lives, their thoughts and eventually their whole lifestyle. In most researches about advertisements, researchers pay attention to images rather than the language use. But language is an indivisible part of advertisements and most of the time it is language that attracts people's attention to the advertisement and gets them to buy the product to use the service. This research aims to analyze 150 advertisements broadcast on IRIB for 12 rhetorical devices: repetition, omission, composition, metaphor, personification, rhetorical question, simile, hyperbole, onomatopoeia, alliteration, rhythm, and rhyme, in order to specify and analyze the frequency of devices used in Iranian advertisements. Then the researcher analyzed why these devices were used and how they affect people's thoughts and attentions..
