Abstract

The development of technology including the Internet and weblogs has provided opportunities to solve the limitations of the traditional ways of teaching and learning. This study investigated, how blogging could affect writing proficiency of Iranian students and their attitudes towards usefulness of blogs. A group of 33 Iranian preuniversity female students, aged 17-18, were arranged in groups of three. They set up their blogs and continued blog activities during 5 months. This study employed a triangulated research approach involving questionnaires, pre/post writing tests, observation, and interview to increase the reliability of the study. The attitudes of the participants towards usefulness of blogs were surveyed using questionnaires and the data were analyzed in six domains. A chi-square test was run for each domain to see whether the differences between observed and expected results were significant. Moreover, pre/post writing tests were used to compare the participants' writing productions before/after the blog project, and they were evaluated based on a rubric-scoring model regarding five criteria (organization, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and word choice). A paired sample t test was used to compare the means of pre/posttests. The results showed that the mean scores of the participants in the posttest were significantly higher than that in the pretest and the students had positive attitudes towards using blogs. The results of this study may benefit teachers, students, and those involved in teaching and learning..
