Abstract : This study investigated the effect of planning on foreign language written production with regard to task type. The participants were 90 Iranian learners of English as a foreign language attending Islamic Azad Universities, Arak, Hamedan, and Malayer branches, as well as Payam-e-Noor University of Malayer in Iran. They were both males and females and at the ages of 21 to 27. The participants had been sampled out of EFL students through taking a pretest. They were asked to write a narration (task) based on picture- series presented to them under three different planned conditions (no- planning, within-task planning, and strategic planning conditions). Based on the results of this experimental study, it was inferred that the strategic planning group had outperformed the within-task planning and both of them had outperformed the no-planning group. The implication of these findings was that time allocation for planning is a significant factor which may affect the quality of writing and should not be overlooked by teachers and professors. However there were some minute differences between males and females participating in the study, the Schefe test confirmed that the significant differences were because of the planning conditions rather than the gender of the participants..
