Abstract	:	Within the framework of contrastive rhetoric, the present study was based on four questions about the existence of cross-cultural differences in rhetorical terms between the expository essays written by Persian EFL writers and the English preferred style. Four rhetorical features were examined including: deductivity, linearity, explicit use of discourse markers, and reader orientation in the five paragraph expository essays written by Persian EFL writers. The material in this study consisted of (1) the expository essays written by 110 students from 6 universities in Iran, (2) four analytic scoring scales developed and validated by the researcher, and (3) Internet-based version of the TOEFL test data (TOEFL iBT) for 2009. The findings of this research lend support to the general conclusions of the other contrastive rhetoric studies in Iran about the existence of cross-cultural differences in rhetorical terms between the Persian and western preferred styles. The study also verifies Silva's (1993) conclusion about the nature of L2 writings in general. Finally, this research provides a number of theoretical and pedagogical implications for EFL writing instruction and research..
