Abstract : There is no doubt that vocabulary has a very important role in the process of language learning. The majority of students studying foreign languages cites vocabulary as their number one priority (Crow, 1980; Yorio, 1971) and agrees that their difficulties arise from their inadequate vocabulary knowledge (Nation, 1990). Due to the importance of vocabulary learning and students' problems in forgetting what they have learned in a short time after initial instruction, metacognitive instruction was proposed as a possible mediator of improvement.To this end, two groups of male students, who were linguistically homogeneous, were selected from students studying in grade three at two different junior high schools in Mobarakeh. One group was randomly assigned for control and the other for experimental group with an equal number of thirty participants in each. Then after applying the related criteria concerning the selection of words, forty words were chosen as to be instructed. The words were divided in eight lists of five words. Each list was instructed in one session. All the activities concerning the presentation and the practice of each list were the same for both groups of the study; the only difference was that the list of experimental group included sentences that had to be filled by students after each fifteen-minute session. This group was instructed about filling the sentences in one forty-five-minute session before the beginning of the instructional period..
