Abstract : This study investigates the avoidance of English phrasal verbs by Persian learners. Two groups of Persian learners (intermediate and advanced: a total of 60) took both of the tests (multiple-choice, translation), which included literal and figurative phrasal verbs. To fulfill the purposes of the study, sixty female learners of English were chosen from those learners of Islamic Azad University, Taft Branch who were majoring in English-Persian translation by administering the OPT and were randomly assigned to two intermediate and advanced groups. Data were collected by means of two kind of tests (multiple-choice & translation). The results show that three factors (proficiency level, phrasal-verb type, and test type) affect learners' avoidance of phrasal verbs. The authors speculate that the differences between first and second languages and the semantic difficulty of phrasal verbs may be reasons for the learners' avoidance. Incorporating the findings of previous studies, this study claims that learners' phrasal-verb avoidance behavior is a manifestation of interlanguage development.Keywords: Avoidance Strategy, Phrasal Verbs, Literal Phrasal Verbs, Figurative Phrasal Verbs, EFL Learners, Proficiency Levels.
