Abstract : In this work, a novel planar twin arc-slot antenna design is introduced which excitesvery little surface-wave power. The twin arc-slot antenna consists of two concentric, sec-ond resonant arc-slots of equal radius printed on an electrically thick dielectric substrate.For a specified substrate, arc-slot length and frequency it is demonstrated that there is acritical arc-slot radius at which the power lost to the dominant TMo surface-wave mode isminimized (through phase cancellation) and the radiation efficiency is maximized- A the-oretical radiation efficiency of 90.535 is obtained for a twin arc-slot antenna at secondresonance on a quarter dielectric wavelength thick substrate with a dielectric const antof E, = 10.2 at a design frequency of 9.239 GHz. The theoretical surface-wave efficiencyis 99.840 indicating that surface-wave suppression is almost complete and almost allof the reduction in radiation efficiency is attributed to back-side radiation loss. For asimple two-port feed network, simulated and experimental radiation pattern data areshown to be in agreement with theory..
