Abstract : Existing recognition systems, though dependable, still exhibit a certain amount of falseacceptances and false rejections. When these errors occur in a high security applicationsuch as automatic banking, such errors are not acceptable. One solution to theseprobtems is to combine various modalities. A multi-modal system puts in play manydifferent types of sensors. The implementation of this sort of approach leads onenaturally to conceive on an individual basis each of the unimodal sub-system andthereafter integrate each into the whole. This thesis deals with the elements of a multi-modal person authentication system. Two independent sub-systems and a fusionmodule based on person authentication are presented along with their performances.These modules consisted of a face (Principal Components Analysis), a speaker (HMMmodels) and a fusion (baysian mode!) authentication algorithm trained on the M2VTSmulti-media database. We achieved recognition rates of 80.55 and 97.22 for theaudio sub-system depending on the threshold value. In the video sub-system the worstscore was 80 and the best 100 depending on the nature of the test set. Finally wereached a recognition rate of 100 for the integrated system..
