Abstract	:	We present design techniques applicable to general web handling machines controlled by adecentralized system of PI controllers. The design technique, being model based, requiresa model of the web handling machine. Dynamic models for general web handling machinesare derived, along with identification methods yielding the important physicai variables,then simplified to yield a set of simpler models. These models correspond to subsystemsof the complete web machine and are single input single output systems, hence single vari-able control theory is applicable. In particular, we employ a design technique based onthe opt irnizat ion of the load disturbance response constrained by the closed loop system'smaximurn sensitivity and complementary sensitivity. The design procedure is illustrated ona three roller experimentd web handling machine..
