Abstract	:	Cross-layer design for mobile wireless networks is becoming increasinglyimportant. This is due to the limited wireless resources, dynamic network topology, andthe different quality of service requirements of applications. How to enable various dataapplications on the resource-limited wireless networks under dynamic environments isthe focus of this dissertation. Cross-layer design is employed such that different layerscooperate in an organized and optimal or sub-optimal way. Several cross-layer algorithmsand protocols are proposed and investigated for different mobile wireless networks,including cross-layer rate and error control algorithms for real-time data transmissionover error-prone wireless links, cross-layer overlay searching protocol for wireless meshnetworks, efficient and reliable cross-layer data broadcast algorithms for wirelesspersonal area networks or sensor networks, and cross-layer analysis of the capacity ofany-size wireless ad hoc networks with application to ultra wideband ad hoc networks..
