Abstract : The in situ measurement of ionospheric plasma density is important because of theionosphere's effect on both earth and space systems. The plasma impedance probe (PIP)is a useful plasma diagnostic tool for determining absolute and relative electron densities,magnetic field strength, and electron-neutral collision frequency. The PIP is a suite ofinstruments including a plasma frequency probe (PFP), a swept impedance probe (PSP),a plasma Q probe (PQP), an experimental ion impedance probe (IRP), and a DC Langmuirprobe (DCP). This thesis presents at a system level the design of the PIP and its functions.The digital control system for the instrument is described in detail and modeled using thesirnulink@ software package.
