Abstract : The use of VLIW architecture has become widespread in the DSP arena due tothe combined benets of simple hardware and instruction level parallelismextracted by the compiler. In an attempt to extract higher processingthroughput we investigate simultaneous multithreading (SMT) to exploitthread-level parallelism in a VLIW DSP. We propose an extended split-issuemechanism that allows us to break the instruction packet syntax of a VLIWcompiler without violating the dataow dependences. The capability to breakVLIW instruction packets gives us greater freedom in scheduling instructionsfrom dierent threads based on functional unit availability. We nd that theSMT VLIW DSP provides signicant processing throughput gains, which couldalso be traded-o for rich energy savings.
