Abstract	:	This thesis uses computer-based optical design tools to explore novel open multipass opti-cal amplifiers and all-reflective fm-space gyroscopes. Key features are the use of folded opticalpaths and. in some examples. segmented gain. The folded optical paths are helpful in minimizingdevice volume. The segmented gain is useful in discriminating against undesirable amplifiedspontaneous emission and distributing the heat load, thus improving both efficiency and beamquality. The optical amplifier design identifies a pathway to high average power, kilowatt outputlaser amplifiers. in a compact structure.
