Abstract : Surface Magneto Optic Kerr Effect (SMOKE) measurements of ultrat hin layers ofFe on graded-stepdensity W(001) are used to test essential predictions of a hystere-sis loop phase diagram model reported by Zangwill e t d . [I]. The oncdimensionalmicromagetic model produces a rich variety of hysteresis loop shapes as well as pre-dictions of switching field strengths that depend on two parameters: A = normalizedstep length and r; = normalized stepanisotropy energy. These parameters are var-ied in the experiment by using a graded-stepdensity W(001) surface (vicinal anglea range from 0' - 15*), and by reducing the step anisotropy energv with chernisorption. Spot-Profile-Analysis Low Energy Electron Dirraction (SPA-LEED) is usedto characterize the stepped surfaces.The experiments indicate that the Zangwill model succwsfully accounts forgeneral trends in hysteresis loop shapes and switching field dependencies as a func-tion of A and r;. Our measured switching fields, (Hswirch) vs vicinality for 2 monolay-ers thick Fe films are generally compatible with results reported by Kawakami et-al.
