Abstract	:	Institutional analysts of organizations are often fascinated with the processes oforder and growth - isomorphism, homogeneity, continuance, and conformity.Unfortunately, this focus on order and its creation has resulted in a failure tounderstand the processes that lead to institutional deterioration. Yet casualobservation indicates that institutional change is all around us. Institutions (selfreproducing practices, procedures, and organizational forms deeply embedded inorganizational fields) frequently lose their symbolic value and dissipate. For example,long held traditions and practices such as physician house calls and door to door saleshave fallen into disuse and organizational forms such as gender-segregated schoolsand telecommunication monopolies have virtually disappeared.Institutionalized practices and forms play an important role in determiningboth internal organizational behavior and inter-organizational relations.
