Abstract	:	The use of straws and other herbaceous biomass as boiler fuel is limited because of rapidformation of deposits in the boiler (i.e. fouling and slagging), which results in high boileroperating costs. The removal of troublesome elements in biomass that lead to slagging andfouling was tested by washing (leaching) biomass fuels with water. Potassium, sodium, andchlorine are easily removed from rice straw, wheat straw, and other biomass in both tap anddistilled water. Simple water leaching leads to considerable changes in combustionproperties and ash transformation in biomass. In general, leaching elevates the sintering andmelting temperatures of biomass, improves ash fbsibility, and reduces the volatilization ofinorganic species at ashing temperatures higher than 575پ‍-C.
