Abstract : Two important types of non-standard maximum likelihood techniques, SimulatedMaximum Likelihood (SML) and Pseudo-Maximum Likelihood (PML), have onlyrecently found consideration in the applied economic literature. The objective of thisthesis is to demonstrate how these methods can be successfully employed in the analysisof energy and resource models.Chapter I focuses on SML. It constitutes the first application of this technique inthe field of energy economics. The framework is as follows: Surveys on the cost ofpower outages to commercial and industrial customers usually capture multipleobservations on the dependent variable for a given firm. The resulting pooled data set iscensored and exhibits cross-sectional heterogeneity.
