Abstract : Two transfer-matrix algorithms for calculating the exact partition function of theQ-state Potts model on finite lattices are introduced. The microcanonical transfermatrix is applicable for integer Q and gives the partition function a t any temperatureand in an arbitrary magnetic field. The random-cluster transfer matrix produces thepartition function for any value of Q and a t any temperature. The critical behaviorof the Potts model in both the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases is studiedusing the distribution of the zeros of the partition function in the complex magnetic-field plane (Yang-Lee zeros), in the complex temperature plane (Fisher zeros), andin the complex Q plane (Potts zeros).
