Abstract : The objective of this dissertation was to characterize quantitatively the microstructureof the high Tc superconductor and buffer layer materials in prototype superconducting coatedconductor tapes with the goal of understanding the microstructure-propew-processingrelationships that determine their suitability for large scale applications of high Tcsuperconductivity. The coated conductor materials were fabricated by the rolling-assistedbiaxially-textured substrates (RABiTS) approach at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.YB~$u&~ (YBCO), a high Tc superconductor, was deposited on various combinations ofoxide buffer layers on RANT metal tape substrates.
