Abstract	:	The steady growth of data rates in magnetic recording systems is translatedinto an increase in recording densities. This results in an increase in the nonlinearintersymbol interference (ISI), which degrades the reliability of the retrieved data.The resulting IS1 comprises both precursor and postcursor terms. In this disser-tation. we introduce new eqiialization and coding techniques that are superior topreviously known techniqlies.In the equalization area. we propose two new nonlinear equalizers for rniti-gating the effects of nonlinear IS1 in magnetic recording systems. These equalizers.which we call RAM-Search algorithms. have been devised to cancel both precursorand postcursor (nonlinear) ISI.
