Abstract : In this thesis we investigate the rote of correlation and coherence in two possiblerealizations of Quantum-dot Cellular Automata (QCA): realizations as a semiconductormulti-quantum-dot structure and as a metal-island single electron tunneIing circuit. Thetwo are different from the point of view of the underlying physics. The metal islandcircuits are very strongly connected to the heat bath and they can be modeled semi-classically, using classical quantities such as charging energy and capacitance. To modelthe semiconductor realization, a quantum mechanical treatment is necessary. The quantummechanical state of the cells evolves coherently, at least for time scales smaller than thedecoherence time. In the first part of the thesis the theory of metal island circuits is used todesign a cell structure permitting adiabatic clocking.
