Abstract	:	Real-time volumetric ultrasound imaging is difEcuIt due to problems with airmyconstruction and due to the slow speed of data coUection. In 1976, a linear amplitudesteered m a y was introduced that uses reduced electronics to steer a monofrequencybeam. The current study examines how the linear amplitude-steered array can beextended to a two-dimensional array operating over a broad range of frequencies tobe used for a real-time volumetric imaging system. First, the properties of the hearamplitude-steered array axe studied, showing that there is a tradeoff between axialand lateral resolution, unique to this array, that depends on the length of the may.Second, various timekequency distributions are sumeyed for use in creating an imagemfrom a single received signal. Next, the concepts of imaging with a h e a r array are&ended to imaging a voIume with a tw~dimexlsiond amplitudesteered array.
