Abstract	:	In digital communication system, it is important to have a technique that allowrestoring digital data and even correcting a limited number of errors. Normally, ori@data, consisting of a string of 0s and 1s is encoded by adding a certain number ofredundant bits to it. The encoded data is then transmitted through a channel and theremay be may be errors introduced. At the other end of the channel, a receiver attempts todecode and reconstruct the original data by examining the encoded signaI making bit bybit decisions. These decisions are then checked against the embedded error correctioninformation to detect or remove any errors. This whole process is called error controlcoding. The ease of implementation using off-the-shelf hardware for different errorcorrection techniques has led to many successful applications of error control coding inpractice. In this thesis, I describe a design for Reed-Solomon encodeddecoder using aField Programmable Gate Array (FPGA).
