Abstract : Direct haptic rendering of voxels from an anatomical dataset provides patient-specifichaptic cues that will greatly aid surgical planning and training. Haptic rendering of hardsurfaces has been already studied extensively and several algorithms exist for renderinggeometric primitives. Such methods produce a large a number of polygons requiring severalhours of preprocessing. The algorithm developed in this thesis uses scalar trivariate B-splinefunction for polynomial interpolation with sixty-four neighborhood points, to generateisosurfaces on-the-fly for haptic rendering. This approach gives c2 continuity in surfaces, aswell as better capture of isosurf'e features of the medical dataset. Haptic interaction on hardsurfaces is modeled with spring and damper, and the amount of force applied is proportionalto the depth of immersion of the haptic probe inside the virtual isosurface.
