Abstract : T h s thesis describes a Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect (MOKE) and MagneticCircular Dichroism (MCD) study of ferromagnetism in ID-V magnetic semiconductorheterostructures. This work was initiated due to the much recent interest in spin-relatedphenomena in semiconductors. The discovery of carrierflight-induced ferromagnetism inInMnAs-based heterostructures has opened up new possibilities for spin-basedmdtifunctional devices that will integrate photonics, magnetics and microelectn,nics.However, an experimental demonstration of direct ultr4fmt optical munipZatiun ofspins/magnetic order in this system has not been reported, although it is considered to bea crucial step towards pico- orfernto-second operation of idomation encoded in the spindegree of freedom.
