Abstract : The popularity of digital television and video conferencing has necessitated the needfor good video compression. In order to allow different vendors to manufacture theirown products which are interoperable, standardization was needed. The Moving PictureExperts Group (MPEG) have introduced many video compression standards includingMPEG-1, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4. While MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 were developed withcompression as the primary goal, MPEG-4 introduced new features for user interaction,and an object-based model for coding. The extraction of individual objects from a frameor a scene is one of the primary functions of the PUIPEG-4 encoder.Since MPEG-4 is a decoding standard. the encoding operation of object extractionhas riot been standardized. Many algorithms have been tested for achieving automaticobject extraction.
