Abstract : A study of the reliability of HF communications for medical andlogistical purposes in an extreme environment was carried out overapproximately three months. The research was conducted during a scientificteam stay on Bouvet Island, a sub-Antarctic island, under the auspices of theNorwegian Polar Institute. Contact information covering six control areaslocated in separate geographical locations in the world was collected. Andanalyzed with reference to prior predicted propagation openings. Solarconditions were obtained for the period of the study for investigation ofpossible effects on the reliability of the employed HF system with definedpower of transmission and antenna systems. At least one single 100 percentreliable medical and logistical contact was made each day into a control area.Discussions of factors that allow for such reliability and possible analogues forthe environment of the Martian ionosphere are presented....,....-...,..tested for theQ1 PC1 bus cardBoth these projects mere sofixare des elopment efforts tonards contributing to dlfferentaspects of Roboucs and lZ1echatronics projects m the Controls and Roboucs Group..
