Abstract	:	In acoustic tracking systems, it is important that the positions of the sound detectors becalibrated to a high degree of accuracy. In this thesis, an optimal Extended Kalman Filtersolution for this calibration problem is discussed. The NSWC (Naval Surface WarfareCenter) acoustic tracking system used in this work is comprised of 20 hydrophonesmounted on shafts and distributed within a 200 x 60 x 25 (ft3) basin. An unmannedvehicle equipped with a periodic sound wave emitter (pinger) maneuvers inside the basin.The shore clock tracks the detection times of the sound waves recorded by eachhydrophone. At the same time, the vehicle's clock records the launch times of the soundwaves emitted by the pinger.
