Abstract : Lossy image compression generaIly involves two basic techniques: transform and quan-tization. A typical example is the current JPEG standard, which could be viewed as atransform coder followed by a variable-lengt h quant izer.Tkansforrn can decorrelate images and represent them by fewer elements in the trans-formed space. Wavelet transform holds many desirable properties such as joint time(spat ia1)-frequency locality, mult i-resolut ion analysis, and fast computation, which makeit a very powerful tool for image compression.Quantization includes scalar quantization (S Q) and vector quantization (VQ) .
