Abstract	:	Exposure of suspended cells to high-intensity, pulsed electric fields ofnanosecond-scale duration force a significant percentage of the treated cell populationto undergo apoptosis, or genetically mediated cell death. Field-treated samples show anincrease in the population fraction demonstrating morphological changes to the cellstructure which are indicative of the apoptotic cascade. Flow cytometric inspection alsorevealed negligible plasma membrane permeability, implying that field-induced changeswere localized within the intracellular space. Changes to the cell ultrastructure initiatedsolely by the electric field stimulus demonstrate the ability to manipulate intracellularprocesses noninvasively without the need of exogenous molecules or organisms.
