Abstract : This dissertation addresses the topic of robot control in minimally invasive surgical procedures.The field of medical robotics presents numerous emerging applications. An important subclass ofthese applications takes advantage of the transcutaneous visualization capabilities of medical imag-ing equipment. This enables surgical robots to manipulate instruments based on medical imagesfor the purpose of precisely deploying instruments within the body in diagnostic and/or localizedtherapy. Such procedures require specialized image-guidance algorithms for the control of the robot.This dissertation presents a collection of methods for precise instrument placement in image guidedminimally invasive surgical procedures.
