Abstract : Uniform microspheres (MS) of biocompatible polymers were investigatedfor use as advanced drug delivery vehicles. Novel methods of fabricating theprecision particles (i.e., precision particle fabrication (PPF) techniques) ofbiomaterials were developed utilizing mechanical, hydrodynamic and electricforces. A number of biodegradable/biocompatible polymers, such as ethyl cellulose(EC), chitosan, starch, and gelatin, were employed to investigate theircharacteristics and suitability as drug carriers. Because the MS size determines thedrug diffusion and/or the degree of polymer degradation, the drug release kineticscould be accurately controlled without uncertainties resulting from uncontrolledsize distribution.Monodisperse MS of EC with two different polymer viscosities (4- and 45-cp) were fabricated by the PPF method. With use of a surfactant, uniformlygenerated EC solution drops could be successfully separated until dry EC MS wereobtained by solvent evaporation at room temperature. The drugs encapsulated inthe EC MS tended to concentrate near the surface depending on their hydrophilicity....,..tested for theQ1 PC1 bus cardBoth these projects mere sofixare des elopment efforts tonards contributing to dlfferentaspects of Roboucs and lZ1echatronics projects m the Controls and Roboucs Group..
