Abstract : This study was undertaken to investigate the feasibility of using anaerobicdigestion as a technique to recover solar energy embodied in excess algal biomassproduction harvested from Clemson University's high rate algal based PartitionedAquaculture System (PAS) as an energy source to support PAS operations. The recentlypatented PAS has been demonstrated to be capable of yielding a 3-4 fold increase in fishproduction capacity as compared to conventional aquaculture systems. However, asuccessful operation of PAS depends on rapid growth and removal of algal sludge,typically resistant to biodegradation.The energy crisis of the late 1970's and early 1980's lead to the search foralternative energy sources as a replacement for fossil fuels. These included hydrogen,solar energy, as well as, ethanol produced from fermentation of biomass.
