Abstract	:	Beams diffracted by planar surfaces having a two-dimensional (2-D) periodicitymay exhibit strong spatial modifications that cannot be explained in terms of con-ventional geometric arguments. These effects include 2-D longitudinal and transverselateral displacements, focal shifts, beam waist modifications, and angular deflectionsfor each of the diffracted beams. We perform a rigorous analysis of these phenomenaby first developing a formalism for plane-wave scattering by 2-D periodic impedancesurfaces, and applying it to investigate the diffraction of Gaussian beams in the parax-ial regime.
