Abstract	:	Kathmandu Valley represents one of the oldest cultural hubs in the Himalayas. Thehistoric towns in the valley consist of densely built traditional Chowk and Bahal houseswith enclosed courtyards. With exposure to the outside world since 195 1, the westernstyle single-family detached house has become an image of the modem home and a statussymbol. In the context of the exploding population, the prevailing trend of these freestanding houses have exacerbated urban sprawl and led to inefficient use of the limitedagricultural land in the valley.
