Abstract : Instruction cache activity accounts for 30-50 of the overall chip energy consumedin current day embedded systems. Besides, the power dissipation due to switchingactivity from continuous accesses makes the instruction cache a prominent hot-spoton the chip. This makes it imperative to reduce the number of instruction cacheaccesses. Embedded applications are characterized by their loopy nature where asubstantial part of the execution time is spent within a few program phases. Severaltechniques have been proposed to reduce the level-1 instruction cache (IL1) accessesdue to frequently accessed loops in order to reduce the overall chip energy consump-tion. Some techniq.
