Abstract : Passive sonar transducers were designed, fabricated, and characterized in thiswork. Two different designs were studied. The first was a piezoelectric ceramicJepoxycomposite suitable for fabrication in large quantities. The ceramic topology of thesecomposites mimics the reticulated structure of sacrificial precursor foam. Beforecoating with ceramic slurry, the foam can be distorted by stretching or compressingwhile at a temperature above its Tg. It has been shown in previous work that distortingthe foam provides a means to tailor the structure of the ceramic, ultimately improvingsensitivity of the completed hydrophone. This work concentrated on distorting thefoam by compression. which creates a structure with negative Poisson's ratio. Once the.
