Abstract	:	Any communication system can be viewed as a link between a source and a destinationwhere information is sent from the source and received at the destination. The interveningstages are shown in Figure 1.1. The transmitter takes the information from the source andcodes it in a form suitable for transfer over the channel such that the cost of transmission isminimal. In this context, cost is a function of the bandwidth used, the time taken to performthe communication, the degree to which the transmission interferes with other transmissionsoccurring simultaneously and the amount of information that is lost in the communication.
