Abstract : Mid-infrared (IR) and terahertz (THz) wavelength ranges have been consideredthe last unconquered frontier for the many years. With the invention of quantum-cascadelaser (QCL), GaAslAlGaAs mid-IR QCL is already commercialized, while terahertzquantum-cascade laser (THz QCL) is still in its infant state. In order to model a QCL, weself-consistently solve the Schrodinger's equation using the finite difference method.Different scattering mechanisms are incorporated to determine the population inversionfactor and, with the threshold condition, allow us to estimate the threshold current density.To model the surface plasmon.
