This study aimed to investigate the relationship between coherence and violations of Gricean maxims in Persian and English essays. The participants of this study were 30 BA students of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) who were selected based on an Oxford Place Test (OPT) out of 50 randomly chosen students from Islamic Azad University, Rasht Branch, Iran. The OPT was administered to evaluate the participants' degree of homogeneity prior to the study. First, the participants were asked to compose 30 English essays. Later, they were asked to write Persian essays on the same topic. Besides, 3 raters were selected to assess coherence of essays. Additionally, the paragraphs written by learners were compared for the coherence, applying one-way ANOVA. The results revealed that that the more correlated the judgments, the lower the violations of Grice's cooperative maxims. However, being a coherent essay does not necessarily prove that it will stick to Grice's cooperative maxims in the sense that there is a considerable number of essays rated as totally coherent, based on raters' judgments, whereas the same essays appear to be violating with regard to Grice's cooperative principles..
