The community of translators is on the edge of a new era in which accuracy and speed in conducting projects gain the highest priority. In addition, projects are more complicated than any other time and translating teams are finding their place in this critical period. CAT (Computer Aided Translation) tools are the facilitators of this transition and the more translators take advantage of them, the more likely they are to prosper in the market. Translators are widely using these tools in developed countries due to the high share of XML source text formats and GILT projects. However, developing countries including Iran are lagging behind and numerous reasons can be counted for this matter. The current study conducted a survey in order to create a clear picture of the penetration rate of CAT tools among students of five main universities of Iran. 400 students returned the questionnaire which consisted of questions regarding their background and their experience of using CAT tools including word processors, translation memories, terminology management tools and smart dictionaries. The results came relatively disappointing since a noticeable number of the respondents (97 ) had zero actual and practical experience with the CAT tools. This study shows the necessity of teaching CAT tools and holding special classes in order to make students familiar with the changes possible to make by taking advantage of CAT tools.
