Abstract

Metaphor is one of the most important figures of speechand recent progresses in cognitive linguistics have bolded the importance of metaphors in language. Their effect has been essential in making significant movement toward the educational practice and design of teaching materials. This study was done to explore the efficacy of FonF(s) instruction on the learning of metaphorical language by advanced L2 learners of English. First, 60 participants who were homogeneous in terms of language proficiency and metaphorical competence were divided to 3 groups: two experimental groups and one control group. The first group was exposed to the explicit teaching of metaphors (i.e., FonFs). The second group was taught the metaphorical expressions through implicit instruction (i.e., FonF). Whereas, the control group did not receive any special kind of instruction. But they took the same pretest and posttest as the two experimental groups did. For analyzing the data, a three-way ANOVA and analysis of covariance was utilized. The findings indicated that the FonFs-instructed group got better results on the posttest. The results seem to indicate that there is a positive correlation between the FonFs and the metaphorical competence. In addition, it is possible to improve L2 learners' metaphorical competence through FonFs instruction of metaphors.Keywords: FonFs, FonF, Metaphor, Metaphoric competence.
