Abstract : This study aimed at investigating the impact of teaching cognitive and metacognitive strategies on the reading achievement of Iranian pre-intermediate male L2 learners. To this end, 60 male EFL learners out of 120 pre-intermediate L2 learners studying at a language institute were selected based on their performance on QPT. Then, to receive the treatment, they were randomly divided into three groups of cognitive, metacognitive, and control, each consisting of 20 participants. To make sure that they were homogeneous at the outset of the study, a validated reading test was administered. The experimental groups were taught the cognitive and metacognitive strategies; while the control group underwent the conventional method of the institute. Ultimately, the three groups received a reading test as posttest so that the effect of the treatment is uncovered. The results of paired sample t test revealed that there was a significant difference between the pre and posttest mean scores meaning that teaching the strategies helped EFL learners improve their reading ability. The results of one-way ANOVA and post hoc analysis also indicated that there was a significant difference between the cognitive and metacognitive groups in favor of the latter. Hence, metacognitive strategies instruction leads to better improvement of reading comprehension. The findings of the study could be beneficial for L2 teachers, learners, and material developers..
