Abstract
:
The aim of this study is to investigate differences and similarities of refusal speech act strategies in two translated Persian versions of English play "Death of a Salesman" in comparison with original work. Also it comes to show the extent which the translators were successful in the translation of refusals in the same strategies to the original work. For this purpose, translations from Ali-Asghar Bahrambeigi (1984) and Ataollah Nourian (2013) were selected and classification of refusals by Beebe et al. (1990) was examined in the dialogues between characters of the play. The results of the data analysis shows that as refusal speech act deals with people's feelings and it is culture-bound, Translation of refusal speech acts should not be offensive for target audience. Thus, sometimes translators have to add or omit or change a part of refusal strategies to make meaning in the target language and avoid offending interlocutors. Also the results suggest that although there is a little proximity of cultures in this study, but the translators are relatively successful in translating refusal speech acts at the same strategy to author..
