Abstract : It has been argued that applying code switching is not a meritorious aspect of language deserving attention. However, this study was an attempt to investigate the effect of code switching in Iranian EFL setting. In order to conduct the experiment, 60 female intermediate Iranian learners of English as a foreign language were pooled out from among a larger group of students studying in an institute called ETKA in Isfahan, Iran. They were randomly divided into two groups: 30 students in the control group, and 30 in the experimental group. Then, a pretest was administered. During the experimental period, the teacher and students were allowed to employ code switching in the experimental group, but in the control group, it was forbidden. Finally, two posttests were administered. The data were analyzed by conducting two independent t tests. It was found that there was a significant relationship between code switching and improvement of proficiency level among Iranian EFL learners in both immediate and delayed posttests. The findings of the study can be useful for changing negative attitudes toward code switching. Moreover, it might have some pedagogical implications for English language teachers and learners..
