Abstract : This study is an attempt to explore how sentences containing FSPs are understood in Persian. Actually, investigating the potential impact of FSPs on the information structure of such sentences regarding their intonational patterns is the major concern of this thesis. To this, grammatical judgments of native speakers of Persian on FSPs as the main data are gathered and investigated. This study reveals that Focus Sensitive Particle can be known as a focused word in Persian in a sense that generally contains the highest pitch peak in the IP. The data gathered is analyzed by qui-square test. The frequency percentages are examined and compared as well. Inasmuch as the results indicate that a correct recognition of FSPs in a sentence is achieved through intonation, a significant relation between FSPs and intonation structure in Persian is recognized. Moreover, this study shows that exclusive focus particles are better recognized than inclusive ones through intonation. A significant difference between two groups of male and female in recognition of FSP by intonation is obtained as well. And finally, it is also argued that due to resolving FSPs ambiguity through scope, FSPs can be understood as having scope properties. Therefore, it is concluded that Focus Sensitive Particles in Persian need to take scope over a word in order to bring it into focus..
