Abstract : Online language education is a recent trend around the world as well as in Iran and investigating different factors that may affect learners' success in this growing channel of education is a must. This study was an attempt to investigate the relationship between locus of control (LOC) orientation as a psychological construct and academic achievement of Iranian online learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). The participants of the study were 100 students studying English online at Iran Language Institute. The instrument used was Trice Academic LOC questionnaire which identifies orientations of internality or externality. The participants' grade point averages (GPAs) were the measure of their academic achievement. The t-tests for the independent samples were performed on the data to achieve the objectives of the study. The findings of this study revealed that (a) there was not a significant relationship between LOC and academic achievement (b) there was not a significant difference between male and female participants in LOC orientation(c) there was no relationship between LOC and academic achievement among internal genders (d) external females were better achievers than external males (e) and finally the age did not have a significant relationship with LOC and academic achievement. It is suggested that the online educators and administrators look for more trenchant factors that affect online learners' achievement.
