Abstract

Gambits as one aspect of formulaic expressions act as an opening remark and help speakers to maintain the smooth flow of an everyday conversation. Inappropriate use of gambits may arise as a consequence of lack of mastery of using gambits in maintaining the conversation. This study aims to investigate the similarities and variations between native speakers of English and Persian and also across the two genders regarding the use of different categories of gambits. To achieve this end, 50 native speakers of Persian, with equal numbers of males and females, and 36 native speakers of English, with equal numbers of males and females were selected through recordings of conversations in different TV Channels. The data included 40 hours recordings of naturally-occurring face-to-face conversations between two (or more) participants in both languages. In other words, 20 hours of the conversation were recorded from Persian native speakers, and 20 hours were recorded from English native speakers. Employing Edmondson and House's (1981) system, the frequency of gambit tokens were counted and their functions were classified; then, using Chi-square test, they were analyzed. The results showed that the differences between naive speakers of both languages regarding the occurrences of gambit categories were significant. With regard to using different types of gambits across the two genders, Chi-square statistics, however, revealed the significant differences between males and females. To conclude, the findings of this study have implications for language learners to learn gambit expressions as elements to improve the quality of their speaking..
